Haha, thanks! Do you still do Daily comics during the summer? I guess you’re busy with your internship thing though.
Nah, the word bubbles aren’t anything fancy. I just make a white shape then using Blending Options in photoshop to outline the shape in black. 🙂
Nope, I don’t draw Daily comics during the summer. Instead, I’m trying to figure out ways to draw better comics more quickly. It would be nice to draw each of next year’s Daily comics in 60 minutes or less, with a decent level of quality. That means I need to become skilled at drawing in a minimalist yet sufficiently expressive style. Can you give me an idea of how long it took you to make each of these pages? Did you ink them, or did you just adjust levels in Photoshop?
I think there might be an opening for another Daily cartoonist next year — you should apply!
And you should advertise this site more if you’re going to put this kind of effort into it. Maybe once you get this storyline going…
I should probably dust off my Web site (solokingdom.com) and start a web comic. I already have some sketches in my sketchbook. Let’s see what happens…
Yeah, it takes me about 4 hours to make each of these pages (including word bubbles). What I do is I sketch using blue pencil, then I “ink” using normal pencil. Then I scan it into photoshop, take out the blue, and adjust levels to make it darker. It’s a lot easier to draw by hand (though I think you do that already, right?). This also means I don’t have to spend as much time erasing the sketch part.
Haha, I’d love to get my comics in the Daily, but I think they look more for political cartoons? If they’re OK with a “funnies” type thing, I would definitely do that. 🙂
Let me know when you get a webcomic going! I’d love to see it 😀
I haven’t gotten a chance to check this out yet, but CSS is supposed to have some Wacom Intuos4 tablets for loan in the Kane Hall office. I’ve read that this is The Way to do this sort of stuff. There’s also a computer lab upstairs in the Art building which should have several set up already.
4 hours?!? I can definitely understand why, but I bought the tablet in part to avoid that. As wonderful as my tablet is, I sometimes wonder if it was the right choice, or if maybe I just need better software. It seems all I really need is line smoothing, and things would be fine.
The Daily wants witty cartoons about college life, especially ones that are related to current local events. Based on your Honors 263 blog posts, it seems like you can do that already. Although half of my cartoons last year were about politics, the editors don’t really want that. It’s fine if you only want to draw once or twice a week, once every two weeks, etc. — the editors are very flexible. You’re paid about $10-$20 per comic, depending on quality. You only have to come into the office once to fill out your new hire paperwork — comics are submitted online by 4 PM two days before they run. If you’re interested, contact opinion@dailyuw.com for details!
Of course, if you’d rather stick to “funnies,” I have mentioned it to the publisher. I originally wanted to draw for the funnies section myself — and still do. If you’re interested, we could have a “Funnies Friday” or something…
By the way, you need to get on Facebook and share links to each new comic you post. Did you know you can put a Like button by each comic on your site? Check out http://developers.facebook.com/plugins. It would be nice if I (and all your other friends) got a News Feed post every time you added something…
Jeeefffff your suggestions are amazing. I will totally look into getting a Facebook plugin for my site, that would be awesome.
Wow, really? College life comics? I will totally email The Daily and let you know how it goes… it would be so fun to team up and do a Funnies Friday or something. OH MAN. I’m excited.
Well, 4 hours sounds worse than it is ^^; For me, that includes all the deliberating about how exactly I’m going to draw something and erasing and resketching. When I did lined my comics digitally it took me allll day, because I was really picky about the lines. I guess I’m just used to drawing by hand more. But if you watch the Penny Arcade artist ink, he does things pretty quickly because all his lines are one stroke. To each his own, I guess?
Hey, I didn’t realize you were doing a webcomic over the summer! That’s nifty! What program are you using for the quote bubbles — Manga Studio?

Joy! I want to know the rest of the story! And I can’t seem to find the other 7 pages of Storyline on your blog…:)
