They’re pretty important. Even more important than smartphones! The rules aren’t anything like those rules, though. Spheres are strictly associated with certain powers, but not everyone has the same powers if they have the same sphere, it’s just that they have different powers if they have different spheres. Arcana Spheres are different from the rest.
It seems communication spheres can be used for sensing and teleportation as well as communication, and shield spheres tend to have healing powers as well as defensive ones. Since their powers are so different and each cover different areas, it seems that they work best when a group of people with different spheres work together.
I think they need to be expanded on a little more. Also there seems to be more than five. And I get that they’re essentially magic conduits, but then how did Lothar whip his conciousness into his?
Namaphry had a good summary! I definitely agree they need to be expanded on more, since they haven’t played a central role in what characters actually do just yet. A tiny bit of lore about them will come up as this chapter closes, but I definitely need to incorporate it more solidly! I’m really happy to hear you’re interested in learning more about them!
I think maybe I should do wiki-style lore blog posts in between chapters. It’d definitely help me get all my ideas straight and hopefully would be fun to read.
How important are spheres? Are we talking rock paper scissors rules? MTG rules? Fountain rules (where there’s no rules?) I’m legit interested.

Here’s the first description of spheres: http://www.herogirlcomics.com/2012/01/31/storyline-chapter-1-page-12/
