I know this is supposed to be a serious page, but I can’t help feel like I fulfilled some sort of requirement for being a manga artist by drawing this scene.
Why does Jovian care? Like seriously? Why does he care? Is it just because he wants to be a doctor? Mother-fucker you are a king! Get a trainer. Dude is studious and dedicated and loves his people. So why does he care?! He should have just been all “Thanks for making me king, you idiot.” Also if he does care for whatever asinine reason, why throw him down and tell him to run? Again, YOU’RE A GODDAMNED KING! You have dungeons, hell, if you want a favor from your super scary/sexy wizard friend, turn him over. Boom. Insta-wish. Hell it could go both ways! Kill him, and turn the body over, and you prove loyalty, or turn him over alive and you can get out of the deal possibly (although why would you want to get out of BEING KING?!) What am I missing? This seems like manufactured drama. Also seems out of character for Jovian.
Thanks for the feedback, Inaquian! I’m definitely struggling with Jovian’s motivations (well, everyone’s motivations) in this chapter… gotta brainstorm more about how to wrap this up with the ending!
I figured it was because Jovian no longer has control over his life, has a creepy, extremely dangerous guy looking over his shoulder and making veiled (or not-so-veiled) threats on a daily basis, and his would-be mentor is being held hostage. Plus, the kingdom itself is now ruled by a madman and people are getting hurt…
We’ve only gotten a little taste of why Jovian cares about these things, but they’re not strange things to care about. He’s angry at Gear for letting this happen, but maybe he understands that he didn’t have a choice… but he still can’t forgive him for it, maybe because Jovian doesn’t like to think that he might have done the same in Gear’s place.
Being king isn’t really that great, I think. Even Lothar knows it, that’s why he’s exploiting it to gain access to the kingdom’s wealth for his research while coercing someone else into doing the real work for him. He certainly seems to think it’s a drag, and that’s even without someone spoiling his fun.
